A. By the year the pictures were taken.
B. Individual family member's photos.
C. Catagorize by Family Unit (s)
D. Please share your method.
How would "YOU" sort through family pictures?
Whew! I've done that! [G.G. grandparents and siblings, G. grandparent's and siblings, grandparent's and siblings, uncles/aunts/cousins, my parents, siblings/me according to our ages...! ] My method:
A. adults in each family group
B. the children in each family group
C. the years? they take care of themselves, but mark them!
D. pets, if available, in each file.... behind the 'kids'.
THEN, scan and save everything!
Best wishes!
Reply:I just did this while sending Christmas cards. So I could start down sizing things. I ended up doing it by family unit, but like I said that was to start getting rid of them. I had photos of people that my kids didn't even know, so wasn't much point in keeping them. I don't envy you your job in sorting them.
Reply:First by the year. Then by the family group. Then by the specific incident pictured. Probably why I have massive amounts of unsorted photos!
Reply:I have to confess and this is awful . I just am now going thru 4 lg bins of pics and my kids school work to make scrapbooks and I have decided to not organize because it would be overwhelming so thanks to a good memory I'm marking the pics as I go and in the future WILL organize all so that I can from now on make a sensible scrapbook!
Reply:Dependent on photos content, we use all 3 methods -- most of the present pictures being work on are being "staged" in the 'big box'.
Reply:I did the sort by year method on my huge accumlation of family pictures. Broke it down to decades. Then got bogged down with trying to label the pictures as to names, places, etc. I don't know if they will ever make it into the orderly collection of albums that I had envisioned.. My plan was to prepare Family History type photo albums for each of my four grandchildren. They are so young now. Maybe I will finish them by the time the first one gets married. Then it can be a wedding gift!!!!!
Reply:i did it my way''
Reply:Funny you should ask... I just did this.. got a digital picture frame for my parent's anniversary... Mostly did it all at random.. I grouped a few that were taken at the same time or similar, but it mostly skipped all over the place.. came out great!
Reply:By the timeline the pictures were taken.....if I ever got the chance to do it. Most that are in the albums are like this but a lot are in a box waiting.
Reply:Nearly all my Photos, from 1945 to present day, are in boxes. I have a few in frames but the rest are languishing upstairs. How sad!
About 6 months before the Millenium I had the brilliant idea of making an album for each of my 3 children from babyhood to the present day. They were then aged 31,35 and 36.
I duly sorted through all my photos, in piles for each 'child' adding some to each from 1945 to 1960.
Guess what? I never completed them. I am so cross because I thought it was a lovely idea and on that note I WILL do it, this year.
Reply:D. Would have to be my answer. I do group them but I also individualize the few that are old and may matter to a certain individual when I move on.
Reply:When my were sorted my daughter did it by year. As she scapebook them the leftovers went by event and year. It is a good system for her.
Reply:It's a task I have never undertaken successfully. I always end up looking at them and never getting them put up. They are everywhere. I wouldn't recommend this method to anyone.
Reply:I would do it by the year it was taken. It is neat to see how people's looks change thru out the years..
Reply:First I sort them by family. Then by year. Events.
1986 Smith Family picnic
1986 Jones visit (August)
1997 Ann and Bill Jones Wedding
2007 Christmas
Then by catagory:
Mom's Life in Pictures
Dad's Life in Pictures
Animals
Cars
Sunsets %26amp; Sunrise
Costumes
Miscellaneous
I have been doing this for years. I scan old photos and TRY to catagorize them so I can find them easily on CD's. It gets messed up fast if you don't keep on top of it.
It's fun and rewarding to do. Good Luck!
Reply:family unit,then yr,or if u want a weedeater
Reply:By the year and by family unit.
Reply:By my marriages!!! I've been married 5 times and you know how it is when it's "new", pictures galore!!! LOL!!! Good question!!! Like your new Avatar!
Reply:Just two files :- My Family which is kept in a velvet lined box in this study. The Wife's Family which I keep in a tatty cardboard box down the shed.My wife's family has actually increased as mice have nested in it.
