P.c.o.s......?

My eldest sister has P.C.O.S. which is sort for polycystic ovary syndrome and i exhibit much of the signs that she did beofre she was diagnosed. I heard it ran highly between sisters because her doctor told her this. This whole thing makes me nervous and i was wondering if anyone had further information or advice. Thanks

Reply:I have PCOS...I don't know if it runs between families, but I would start watching for symptoms if you're worried. I gained weight, missed periods, got hair in the most unfortunate places (like my face!), I was aggressive, and though I didn't have this, another symptom can be large, masculine muscles. What PCOS does is make extra testosterone in your body which is why these things happen. You may get ovarian cysts, too. It can cause fertility issues, but I had my first child with no problem. The medicine that the Dr. put me on has relieved my symptoms, I'm losing weight, the hair is going away, etc.





However, there are a LOT of conditions that exhibit these same signs including diabetes, a pituitary tumor, Cushing's Syndrome, etc. The only way to diagnose PCOS is to eliminate all other possible causes, so if you think you have it, be prepared to take LOTS of tests. Health insurance is a must because it gets pretty pricey. Good luck!
