HI. I live with my mom and my dad... (im not old enough to move out yet so dont think im a weirdo)... and i have always had hardwood floors in my room. But it really anoys me and lately to the point were i think im going to ask for carpet. But b4 i do... i would like to no some things about how carpet can be good and some on how carpet cn be bad..... Now plz take to mind that pretty much all my father cares about is the cost of things b/c my family is sort of on a low income budget. All i am asking 4 is just a simple list. Just somethings that I can bring up when my parents and I DO have the conversation. Maybe even recomend a few stores in the Capital District of New York. Thnx so much!
Can you give me some pros on having carpet?
Consider yourself a lucky kid with hardwood floors. Good for allergies, easy cleaning, warm enough for walking barefoot (wear socks in the winter). Best flooring there is.
Con: noise.
Wood insulates so I do not think it will keep the room any cooler or warmer than with a rug over it. It will just feel that way because heat rises to the ceiling and wood feels cooler to touch that fabric/carpets because it transfers heat from the hand/foot much faster. I have wood floors in my son's room and he never complains of temp which is the same thru out the home.
Look for a remnant or a runner to place near your bed or where you generally walk in and out of your room. They have fairly long runners at Mervyn's. Wal-mart. Target etc which have a rubber backing.
Pier 1 has rag rugs which are great but need a rubber pad which can be purchased from any home store.
It's expensive to bind a remnant which otherwise is the cheapest solution.
Binding the remnant is expensive - about $1+ per foot. So look for a remnant that you can cut so that the rug fibers hangsover the cut edge. Buy a tube of caulking and caulk near the bottom of the rug to glue the fibers on the edge to the bottom of the rug. Many carpet stores have very cheap small or narrow remnants.
You can cut the rug on the back side easily with a very sharp knife or a carpenter's razor knife. Let your dad cut it to size, or if the store does not charge for cutting ask them to cut it to size you want.
Reply:How about considering a carpet remnant? You can get them from a carpet store. They might even be able to bind the edges for you. Use a non-slip rug pad underneath and you will have a less-expensive alternative to regular carpet, the hardwood floors won't be ruined by nail holes (which you will have if you get carpet installed) and you can take the rug with you when you are old enough to get your own place.
Carpet Pros:
comfy under-foot
softens the sound in the room
looks good
adds color to a room
defines a space within the room
Cons:
hard to clean sometimes
installed carpet will put holes into the hardwood floors that will need to be filled if the carpet is removed later on
needs to be vacuumed on a regular basis
Good luck!
Reply:An area rug, or just a couple throw mats would work good. They're cheap! And come in some pretty cool colors and designs.
Reply:If you're doing a bedroom and you're worried about cost, then just buy a remnant. These are "leftovers" of carpet rolls, so the manufacturers or installers sell them for cheap. You can get them in a wide range of sizes, colors, etc from building supply stores or carpet stores, and they generally only cost $100 - $300. Unless you're bedroom is huge, you should be able to find one large enough to go wall to wall.
Pro-carpet arguments: no more cold toes, decreases you heating bill, running a vacuum is easier than mopping the floor.
Reply:Carpet is definitely warmer underfoot and keeps noises down (that might be a big plus for you!).
Doesn't scratch up like wood
Limitless colors/patterns available
You might also talk them into getting a carpet remnant, rather than wall-to-wall. These are much cheaper and you can have the carpet store "bind" the edges so they don't ravel. The stores have a section of these in back - take a look around.
Good luck!

Reply:it will keep your room warmer therefore lowering heating bills....it'll keep your feet warmer too!!
Reply:well carpet provides two thing thermal and acoustic insulation (pros) cons dust mites and stains, and the cost
Reply:Well, it will help with heating costs, as the carpet will insulate the floor better.
Reply:it is nice in the winter time becuase hardwood gets cold and you cant get splinters from it
Reply:Kids won't slip on spilled beverages and with the addition of furniture, it will muffle the sound of kid's voices and pounding feet.
Also, you can go barefoot.
Reply:why don't you just get an area rug? they're cheap, you can get them anywhere, and it would still show the beauty of hardwood floors.
