What is an I/C number?

I have received an e-mail from Y! team asking for my I/C number but I don't know what sort of I/C no.. If its identity card no. then of what kind? I am in 12th standard in India. Pls. clarify.

Each country in the world must have the identity card number for country registration. If you don't have one, please refer to your government as fast as you can.
