Any ideas on how to get my dog to stop licking her paw?

My dog started licking her left paw about two weeks ago. I verbally got her in trouble and that helped for a while. Then she got OBSESSED. I ended up buying one of the cone collars and getting some doggie antibiotic cream to put on it b/c it was getting red. It started healing and the hair started growing back...

Then she figured out that if she holds her head a certain way...and stretches...she can still lick her paw with the cone collar on!!

Is there a sort of bandage that I could get? Have you guys ran into this problem before?

Any ideas on how to get my dog to stop licking her paw?
Dogs are capable of aquiring OCD (obsessive compulsive disorder) just like human. Each time she goes to lick it, distract her with a toy or treat or say "no" and when she stops, give her a treat. be consistent and she will get better. Give her lots of praise when she stops, with your tone of voice being high. in the meantime. i would get antibiotic ointment and wrap it until it heals.
Reply:Bitter apple spray... and find out why she is licking. It may be allergies, or maybe she has a slight anxiety problem (think doggie OCD).
Reply:This can be a sign that she has allergies. You should take the poor girl to a Vet to get some medicine.
Reply:If you find a real cure for it let me know...because BOTH my maltese do it...the doctor said its because of anxiety...and there isn't any way to stop them from doing it when they are bored or stressed.
Reply:I would take you dog to the vet. perhaps there is something wrong with it's paw, that you cannot see.
Reply:Did you check to make sure there is not a splinter fox tail etc in there?

Dogs also lick their feet because the feet itch - this is a common red flag that signals food allergies, does what she is on contain corn and wheat?

It is possible that she has a "hot spot" on that paw in which case it needs to be kept dry; no creams...

See your vet for proper diagnosis and course of treatment, perhaps antibiotics,
Reply:did you take the dog to the vet?

if not, she might have ocd.

humans and animals can both have the disease

if its not that ,maybe the nail is irratated.

my dog had that problem, and it was hard to tell what was wrong.
Reply:take it too the vet it cold have a splinter or allergies
Reply:i would find medication becuase she doesn't realize how much she is hurting herself.
Reply:She needs a thorough vet exam, including the skin to make sure there is no bacteria or infection present, or an injury that you can't see.

It is true that in the majority of cases, this is caused by boredom, and/or anxiety. You can try becoming more involved with her by playing several times a day, and petting her whenever you pass by, etc.

If she is reaching her paw outside the collar, it is not broad/wide enough. They can be cut down, and yours may be too short. The problem is that with a skin irritation where it is constantly moist, it needs to dry out to heal, so wrapping it is not a good idea at this point.

You might ask your vet about an anti-anxiety drug for the short term, perhaps a couple of weeks, then wean her off it and increase her play and exercise time.

Good luck.
Reply:It could be a number of reasons why your dog is licking her paws. I would first take her to the vet to rule out any medical problems. Espceially if there is redness. It could be a dermitits problem which could be caused by the food you are feeding her. One of mine was obsessed with licking his paws and biting his tail. After switching to many brands of food I found that since I switched to Solid Gold, which has no fillers or by-products in it, he has stopped his obsessive licking and biting himself. Definitely see a vet because it could be many things causing this issue.
